Oh, a swing and a miss.
July 12, 2021 at 12:34 am
oh, i like that 🙂
Oh, yes, I know, the Warden is Hidden Legacy, but my mind went to Innkeeper and Maud the Maven…
July 9, 2021 at 1:46 pm
Sure, we believe you. Absolutely!
July 9, 2021 at 2:54 pm
Don’t feel bad. Mine went off-base similarly, at first. Dina owes Cookie a favor, after all. Dying to know what that will be.
There are lots of favors being traded in these ‘verses. Makes me think of The Godfather 😀
July 9, 2021 at 3:00 pm
Thanks Katie! I knew my mistake as soon as I hit “post comment”. 😄
July 9, 2021 at 6:36 pm
Me, too 😂
July 10, 2021 at 12:06 am
Owes Cookie a favor? I’ll just “have” to re-read to refresh my memory. =D
July 10, 2021 at 4:43 am
Mukrats! Hope I spelled that right (and the rest of this post). The whole lees favors thing is a little convoluted to me. Nuan Cee should owe Dina because he didn’t pony up the antidote without Sean’s deal, but then Dina owes Cookie, and Maud may owe something for Helen unless Arland paid up. And does Maud know that Nuan Cee almost let Dina die? I also want to see Sean and Arland meet up with George and realize just how much danger he’s put the DeMile girls in (Dina has almost died twice, well once was a living death, because of his scheming).
July 10, 2021 at 4:24 pm
I’m also really excited about the favour that Nevada owes Michael (or his office at least) after saving her gradmother … And I’m kind of concerned that the office of the warden (Catalina, most likely) will owe them a favour as well now. Intruging! I so wanna know more!

Uh oh! These snippets are killing me…..really. This book cannot come soon enough. I’m so happy that the writing is going well. Thanks!!
July 9, 2021 at 12:20 pm
Oh…. Wow, this is one of those times we wish stories could happen faster without the stress on the authors. =)
Okay, I admit, that’s our normal state, but you are very good at making it surge here and there!
July 12, 2021 at 5:07 am
Actually I just wish for a time machine so that I can go ahead in time and read all the books that I am currently waiting for (Ruby fever, Julie’s second book, Hugh’s second book) :’)

that is my thought
I don’t know if it is evil grandma…because Michael is one of the guys from Scroll I thought…the DNA testing service for Primes, etc. I think it might be the Record’s Keeper. He talks like that. Kind of ominous. 🙂
With one sentence, I just want to read more. True genius authors. My kid who is 12 doesn’t really like to read. I don’t understand. It just doesn’t compute for me. Anyway, as much as I like to read, and anticipate books, it’s hard to relate! She sets a 20 minute timer and can’t wait to be done. She reads in exchange for Robux. And here I am…hanging by a thread to a single sentence!! lol.

Try ” The Dark Is Rising ” series by Susan Cooper to get her interested in reading. The characters start off ages 8 to 10, and finish off in their teens. The books develop as well.
July 9, 2021 at 9:46 pm
Great series! Also the Belgariad series by David Eddings. That’s the one that started it all for me.
July 11, 2021 at 12:39 am
OMG! I haven’t thought about the Belgariad forever! Thanks for the trip to memory lane! <3
Karen the Griffmom says
July 11, 2021 at 9:24 am
My “kids” say Eddings’ characters are more real to them than their own relatives. Go-to comfort reads for all of our family.
July 12, 2021 at 4:17 pm
Mine all started with the Pern books by Anne McCaffery, but the Belgariad and Mallorean are sentimental favorites of mine. My mom bought me the 3rd book on the Belgariad, not realizing that they should be read in order to actually know what’s going on so it took me a long time to get back to the series.

July 9, 2021 at 8:55 pm
My grandmother says that she never read a book in school and that she didn’t like reading. I always told her that she just hadn’t found what she liked to read. Well, at 85ish she developed a love of reading! Now, at 90 her eyesight is mostly gone so she switched to audio books, but she looks forward to her multiple “reading” times each day.
There’s still hope for your daughter! 😊
July 9, 2021 at 11:56 pm
Or try Dragonsong/Dragonsinger by Anne McCaffrey, started both of my boys on reading English while both of them are dyslectic.. Quite a triumph for good books!
Thanks everyone who suggested book series!! You’re all so great… I loved Anne McCaffrey as a kid myself!!

Tamora Pierce could be another one to try out 🙂
July 10, 2021 at 5:29 pm
I love Tamora Pierce’s books. I’ve read & re-read all her books many times … Anne McCaffrey, too & of course, Ilona Andrew’s books over & over. Good writings keeps the stories fresh for repeated re-readings!
July 10, 2021 at 10:15 am
For the 12 year old. I have had this problem with friends and relatives, you are approaching it wrong. The solution is finding the right genre, it will probably be something you would hate, and because of hate you cannot “see” it. Look for attractions in movies, tv series, games, and find an author/series/genre to match. It might be an author you don’t think highly of, or a style of writing you think is poor. Ignore your taste in books.
July 11, 2021 at 3:47 am
Novels & books were expensive as a kid growing up. My parents enrolled me in a library miles from home. Once a month I went with my parents to spend hours in the library book stacks, my other home away from home.
Reading material was arranged by type ( magazine, newspaper, novels), by alphabet, classics or new vs everything else, & children vs adult sections. I read anything & everything that was not nailed down.
Even now in my 60s, reading different authors is an exciting adventure that reminds me of my parent’s greater gift to me of a world of books. And when I travel or move to a new city, I join the nearest library to make me feel at home whenever I move to a new place.
I thought space was the final frontier……..but literally, it is when I discovered IA (first), & then other BDH author recommendations (Anne Bishop, Patricia Briggs, & Faith hunter, etc) which has turned me into a ‘Die-Hard’ BDH’er as in ‘been there & done that, yippee ki-yay ** bought that T-shirt & never-going-home ‘ever’ BDH’er’.
And apart from the IA blog & books, I always keep come back to scour the IA website for recent or previous BDH Book recommendations blogs when looking for ‘stay-cation’ ( & the recent 1+ year ‘Quaran-stay-cation’) new book adventures.
Stay safe, House IA & fellow ‘Die-Hard’ BDH’ers. I am really looking forward to taking the upcoming new ‘IA Adventures Rollercoster Ride ‘ with all of you as we catch up with new & old friends ……

Thanks to my mom having a voracious apatite for reading (she could have opened up her own library) when I was younger, I started to read when I was very young. Only I had one problem: my comprehension was less than 0. I could read but when someone asked me what I read, I would look at them like “I have no idea what you’re talking about”.
My dad had the same problem when he was younger, and asked me if I liked Shakespeare. I told him I did. He asked me why, and I told him reading it made stop and think of what I was reading. He told me to read Shakespeare out loud to see what I was reading then I would begin to comprehend what I was reading. Yes, Shakespeare. It worked to the point I don’t have to read out loud my books.
However, when I work on math, I do read it out loud to make me think of what I’m working on. 😀
July 10, 2021 at 11:37 am
My daughter hated reading too. We finally found out she had an eye/brain problem called convergence insufficiency. A series of excercises helped. She got hooked on the Russell set of Sherlock Holmes retellings. More recently I finally got her to open Innkeeper and she’s devoured it!

July 10, 2021 at 12:00 pm
Mr. Wife, though clearly bright, was militantly uninterested in reading until his mother brought home an inexpensive atlas from the grocery store — it started with the universe and worked its way down to maps and information about individual American states — and followed that by buying an inexpensive encyclopedia, one volume at a time. It turns out he’d thought reading was only for fiction, which didn’t interest him because it contained no data useful for a future scientist/engineer. He only discovered reading stories for pleasure in high school, when he found Solzhenitsyn in translation — information again, and from him branched out to the Russian novelists, followed by hard science fiction.
About a quarter of bright kids are like that.
July 10, 2021 at 1:12 pm
My sister didn’t like to read until middle adulthood. She is now a voracious reader, so there is hope!
July 10, 2021 at 1:14 pm
Also try Narnia series (by C.S. Lewis)!
July 10, 2021 at 6:02 pm
Hiya- finding authors/subjects that click with kids can be tricky- you have my sympathies;). Try, “The Screaming Staircase,” by Jonathan Stroud (awesome paranormal mystery adventure series- kids with swords in adult roles because they see ghosts- yep!), or Patricia C. Wrede’s Enchanted Forest Chronicles (such a hoot- strong teenaged female protagonist/princess who doesn’t want to be a princess), or her Mairelon the Magician series. Diana Wynne Jones is good, too. If she likes puns, Piers Anthony’s Xanth series is fun. Or, I haven’t met a kid yet that doesn’t get sucked into a Choose Your Own Adventure book…guess I got a little carried away…lots of possibilities;) Good Luck!
July 10, 2021 at 7:06 pm
Ask her what the words look like. There is a syndrome called Scotopic Sensitivity (they say about 30% of the population has it, and it’s not a vision problem) where people have difficulty with black words on white paper. For some reason the brain doesn’t process it correctly, so the words look like they are floating above the paper or sliding off the sides. The reader is so focused on getting the words to remain still that there is little to nothing left over for comprehension. This can also be why some people hate to read, because it’s such a chore. If it’s caught early enough, they may become avid readers, but a lot of people who don’t find out until later in life still won’t read for fun. This is also in no way related to intelligence levels, it’s strictly a processing issue. The solution is to change to background color of the paper. A colored gel (like a clear report cover) can do the trick, just do a little experiment to see what color(s) work best for your daughter. The reason that it can not be caught early is because people/kids don’t realize that not everyone sees the words like they do. They think it’s just them and they’re not smart enough to still “get” reading.
July 11, 2021 at 4:26 pm
Glasses help too, a mother said her young son called out to her: ‘ Come and look; the words all stay on the same line!’

May I suggest The Ranger’s Apprentice (by John Flanagan), anything by Andy Griffiths (especially the Treehouse series), The Little White Horse (by Elizabeth Goudge). I am also a huge fan of The Belgariad by David Eddings, anything by Anne McCaffrey and also Mercedes Lackey.

That was Michael Latimer, the Prime who offers to save Nevada from abuse during Baranovsky’s ball.
This is Michael of the Record Keeper’s office.
Hope this helped 🙂

Micheal reminds me of Lurch 100 years younger and member of a punk rock band, picture Marilyn Manson, only much better looking. I wonder if he’s related to the archangel Michael, maybe a mini-Michael.
Ok, enough of that.
July 9, 2021 at 3:34 pm
I’m just imagining poor Michael being tasked with keeping a journal with “favors.” Could you imagine some of his entries?
July 9, 2021 at 3:36 pm
Thank you House Andrews.
Personally with the whole ‘collect a favour’ I’m taking it to mean that the Warden office is asking for a favour giving the Office of Records an IOU. Could be totally wrong but very fun to speculate.
Roll on the next book (in a kind and gentle way)
July 9, 2021 at 3:48 pm
I’m intrigued by Michael. Doe he get a HEA?

July 9, 2021 at 4:55 pm
The minute Michael was introduced I thought: Arabella!!
July 9, 2021 at 3:49 pm
I’ve always found the two Michaels utterly fascinating. What is the Office of Records Michael’s powers? Just how strong is he? Why does he serve the Office? Then there’s Michael Latimer(sp?). Why is he so concerned about abused women? What’s in his background that has sensitized him to that issue? Why were Montgomery and Rogan surprised to hear that about him? Hmmm. Things to ponder!

July 9, 2021 at 4:39 pm
I will resist whining for the next Hidden Legacy book, though your post made me get a fresh wave of desire for it. Sorry, that came out sounding way more suggestive than it did in my head…
Anyway! I thought I would mention that I just finished a reread of the Kinsmen stories (SO good— like everything House Andrews writes!) and I’ve been making myself read something else until August before I do a complete reread of all the Kate Daniels works (in order, including short stories and novellas).
I have already done a Kate reread recently (when Julie’s book came out, I started with Magic Bites and timed it so that I finished with Blood Heir on the day it came out) and I try to limit myself to one reread of my favorite books each year so that I don’t ruin them for myself.
August is bad because it marks the end of my luxurious summer off (I am a teacher) and I will blunt the pain reading about Kate and company. LOL!
THANK YOU for the hours and hours of pleasure you have given me with your work. Hope you are having a great summer!

👀 Contemplating another reread after one sentence. Hmmmm Records keeper vs Office of the Warden.

Amazing how one little sentence can brighten your day! My mind is reeling- can’t wait! Thank you!!

Evil grandmother. 😬

Anybody wanna visually describe this? I’m guessing it’s a photo or the like. My phone won’t read the text to me. To any volunteers, thanks!!
It is a quote from Ruby Fever, the upcoming Hidden Legacy book, and it says:
“We always welcome an opportunity to collect a favour from the Office of the Warden, don’t we Michael?”
The image background is black and white nebulae swirls.
I hope this helps 🙂

Yes! This helps so much!! Thank you!!

Amazing snippet!! Like other fans, I am having a really hard time waiting for Ruby Fever. I want to be polite, and not apply pressure. But oh……….. Please ditto Ann’s whine whine snivel snivel. 🙂
IA and Patricia Briggs are probably my absolute all time favorite authors. Also really enjoy CJ Cherry, Jim Butcher (Dresden files), and Jennifer Roberson’s (Tiger and Del) works. While we wait for Ruby Fever and the novella, I would soooooo love suggestions for other writers and series to tide me over. I am a voracious reader, it is my escape from a world that is… not always kind.
SOOO looking forward to the novella, and Ruby Fever. And the next Hugh and Elara book. And the next Julie book (more on Tulip, please!!!). For heavens sake, I get SO excited even seeing a new blog post here! I’m hopeless. Ummm, or to steal and paraphrase a line from “Romancing the Stone,” perhaps a “hopeful” addict.
Love the comments too. Nice to see kindness in the world. And thank you Ilona and Gordan, for the glimpses into your lives. Fascinated (but not in a creepy way!!!) with Kid 1 and Kid 2 and the menagerie. Having grown children ourselves, it is so funny to have gone through similar… escapades. Though no scorpions for us!!! Ummm, yet. Oregon isn’t conducive to them. Though did have some experiences in CA with family.
Never met you, yet you feel like family. Loved the Zoom session, would love for you to do more.

Did you ever read the Valdemar series by Mercedes Lackey?
Or Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunters or Psy Changling series? Nalini is right up there with Ilona Andrews!!!
July 10, 2021 at 9:42 pm
Oooh, love Mercedes Lackey too, thank you Liz! Have only read small amounts of Nalini Singh, I will check these out! Thank you!!!!
July 12, 2021 at 8:52 am
If you are starting out with the Guild Hunter series by Nalini Singh, start with Angel’s Blood. That’s the first book. If you try to read the books after Angel’s Blood, they may not make a lot of sense.
If you are starting out with the Psy/Changling books, start with Slave to Sensation. That’s the first book. You definitely want to start with that book.
Also, if you like reading about contemporary works, Nalini Singh also has her Rock Kiss series.

Oh, yeah. Eagerly awaiting the new Psy/Changeling to be released 7/20/2021 and the new Guild Hunter coming 10/2021.
But this takes nothing away from awaiting the third Catalina tale. Or the next Innkeeper. Or the next Aurelia. Or the upcoming unnamed novella.

Hmmm, wonder what the favor is… Oh man, what a tease you guys are. (Also, hi there, Michael!)

Ah, commerce! One for you, one for me, one for you, two for me….. 🙂

I love Hidden Legacy and appreciate the snippets. As reading became an addiction of mine, I have removed kindle for a time to be more responsible for the use of my time. My only exception for any fictional reading is Hidden Legacy; love the world, the characters and the parameters you set in the blending of intimacy in the story between characters. It’s perfect and I hope you’re both proud of what you create for us. X

Even Michael suggested that granting that favor was a bad idea! Duncan certainly did not think it was a good idea. So we can expect this favor to bite Catalina in the butt at some future date. However, she is no longer alone and will ace the challenge; I’m way more worried about her evil grandmother and the safety of her nephew!

Hmm. Thank you, Ilona Andrews for the snippet. I assume from Ruby Fever. So looking forward to its publication.

Didn’t Nevada owe her evil grandmother a favour? Or was it Catalina? Going back to re-read series now.
July 11, 2021 at 12:41 am
Ohhhhhh! Now 2 members of the Bailey family owe the Record keepers a Favor!
Wow, this is gonna be costly, I just have a feeling….
July 11, 2021 at 12:44 am
Baylor! Not Bailey! ……

What’s going to happen to the Warden once Catalina (at al.) discovers he’s grandpa (Alessandro shouldn’t keep that back from her, since they are giving to be married and all), he’s a Siren and has been using his magic oh so subtlety and making people like him and trust him, and that he is also Caesar?
If I am wrong about all that, then I suck at following clues.
July 15, 2021 at 11:31 am
I, too, think Linus is both Grandpa and Caesar, but I doubt he could be a Siren without Catalina recognizing his use of a magic so similar to her own. In other possible clues…. I don’t see Arabella and Micheal together. Her interest in the incredibly handsome, super smart, marshal artist Stephen Jiang has me suspecting he and Arabella may end up fighting a very large monster where Stephen indeed uses a Thunder Fist to help the transformed Arabella.

This quote sound like the speaker is the Record Keeper (who often talks to his assistant, Michael). So he’s likely talking TO Linus or Catalina. No indication if it’s connected to the favor Nevada owed them.

This post proves that many people want to imagine the books to be written when nothing is written to tell anyone what’s going to happen. I looked at it the day it was posted and I thought there was nothing there at all, then today I read all the imaginative things people are saying about it and I wonder where they are getting the idea that this post actually says something to suggest how the book will go when it’s written. It gave me no hints whatsoever as to what is to come.
Perhaps this is a personal failing — one of many I seem to have. I cannot imagine where things will go in a book unwritten from a single sentence taken out of context. This is, to my mind, proof positive that if you posted your grocery lists, people all over the world would ponder what you could possibly be having for dinner. It reminded me immediately of “No soap. Radio.” Well done.

Do the Wardens Remi d anyone else of the dude that did the testing for the Baylor family and his assistant?
July 11, 2021 at 3:07 pm
Sorry, typos galore!! I meant do the Michael and the Recorder guy remind anyone of the people from the Innkeeper series, can’t remember what they were called

Catalina has already repaid one favor that Nevada incurred, one to Augustine Montgomery. The favor incurred to the Office of Records that we know about, in Wildfire, was also a favor from Nevada, not the Office of the Warden. So is this quote regarding Catalina repaying Nevada’s Wildfire favor, or is this another favor, incurred by the Office of the Warden, in Ruby Fever?

Is the wiki that used to have descriptions of all of the different world gone? I was trying to look up what all the different colors of magic are in Kate Daniels world and I couldn’t find it. But I know there used to be a site that described all the different elements of the world and how the magic worked for both kate daniels and Hidden Legacy, but I can no longer find it.

Magic in the KD universe scans as follows:
Human- blue Divine- silver Animal- yellow Shifter- green Vampire- purple Necromantic magic (including zombies)- red
Most of these can be found in Magic Bites, end of Chapter 3 (pages 71-73). I hope this helps 🙂

Don’t do it Catalina! House Baylor already owes the Office (of House Records) a favour. Your grandmother preferred to die than to have you guys owe a favour.

I love the hidden lagacy books and am very exited for the next one! I also am a big fan of Leon! Will he appear a bit more often in the following books? I’d love to learn more about him 🙂
