The neighbours on the street down below us had a beagle that howled nightly. My airedale pup and the next door neighbour’s Daschund both learned to howl from him. It was a very loud Arooooooooooooooo! that came from my Airedale but the Daschund ‘s pitch was about two octaves above that.
Oh that poor thing! To be so cruelly abandoned! (Total sarcasm here) 😉😁
Sookie has the soul of a thespian ahahahah
I love how melodramatic she is
It’s so hard to be a boxer. So. Hard.
Omg so funny. I was sitting here working away both of my dogs were asleep next to me. I then took a break to read/watch this post. With the sound on. As soon as Sookie started to “sing” both dogs were awake(ish) and vigilant. Sooo funny. Senbei’s hair was more crazy than usual bc he just woke up… hahaha
And mine barked in solidarity. She already got a nice hike in, though, so it was mainly sympathy.
Awww bless 💜
I have a limited capacity of dog communication but I have noticed that every dog I meet is most cruelly abused and neglected by their human owners – they will look perfectly fine but then they will wriggle and whine and roll over in tragic despiar, begging for strokes as you approach, yapping for attention, quite clearly in dire and desperate need of my love, starving for some tasty snacks and longing for extra walks.
It’s actually astounding that all these dogs say the exact same things, complaining about their hard done by lives, but there you go.
If only I could rescue them all to my loving bosom. . . I’m sure they would NEVER say such things about me to other people. . .
My girl is the same. Her little old hips cannot take a long walks but she will cry when I leave to take mine. I am thinking about getting one of those attachment trailers for my bike and taking her on bike rides. Probably would make me the crazy dog lady in our neighborhood, but she would get to go out and smell the sights around.
I see several dogs like that. Also some in strollers, for real. They all look happy, so why not?
Yes! I’ve been the person taking an old dog on walks in a stroller. I got over any twinges of embarrassment real fast because it literally made my buddy’s day. 😊 Also, we all got more sleep because he finally started sleeping better whenever he got a walk. No waking up twice (or more) a night because he had woken up and was wandering around in confused/anxious fashion. Well worth it all around!
Also been the dog in stroller person. Totally worth it to improve quality of life for an aging pet who still would perk up for a walk.
My sister’s puggle absolutely hated his trailer. He wailed his beagle howl and whined his pug whine the whole time. My sister felt guilty when she tried to take him on his bike rides, and when she left him at home to go on her rides. I don’t think she bikes anymore.
I used a stroller for my old girl. She thought she was hot stuff boy!! Miss her still
I just moved to New Braunfels. My neighbor has five or six dashhounds. She walks them twice a day religiously with two in a stroller and the rest on leashes, their little legs racing along like mad.We (the neighbors)think it’s adorable!
Bwahaha!!!
She is protesting the injustice of having people that love her. Poor pitiful baby lolololol
We had an Alaskan malamute that howled piteously when ever he was sent outside. The neighborhood kids called him the singing dog. (No, he wasn’t out long, but sometimes he just needed to not be underfoot.)
My family had a beagle when I was a little girl. Beagles love to howl !! arwoooooo!!
At all times, day and night.
Sherman loved his voice. The neighbors, not so much. One nasty neighbor who always complained, Told my mom she was going to call the cops. My mom yelled back , my dog is a registered American Kennel club dog and it’s in his DNA to sing.
You can’t fight DNA.
And Sherman continued to howl, bless his doggy heart.
I feel for Sookie, sometimes you just got to howl. Loudly!
You have great acoustics in your house.
I Love your house! I love the wide open space, the colors, and the floors😍 Sookie’s a drama queen 😆
Oh Sookie! 😂 you really have the drama down 😁 Now we both know you did not have another foot of walking in you. But the audacity that they would still go without you! I know… *hugs baby* 😂😂
This brings back fond memories of dogs that were part of the family. This is funny(not funny)but, old dogs/people are like that. They want keep doing things they used to. How old is this lady?
Thanks for the video.
Rory thinks I and Tony exist to serve him. Lol If we dare leave without him, his song of outrage is loud and long.
When Fifi (my cat – don’t ask, she actually LOOKS like a Fifi, it wasn’t meant to be her name) hears the dogs next door howling, she starts to meow in sympathy as though whatever is happening over there is just so terrible that she just has to add the song of her people too. LOL.
Neighbors below….their old doggie howls and makes a sound halfway between a long zombie moan and a pitiful whine of the left behind. For five minutes. Every time they leave the home
Their doggie looks like Sookie’s sister
I have two English Mastiff’s that pounce my bed and sing me the song of their people. It’s hilarious
Life is ruff when you’re a dog. Mine was miffed on Friday because we went to the bank and the treat dispenser failed to dispense a treat, even though she stood in my lap and looked as cute as she knows how. The human says it’s not actually a dog treat dispenser, but what does the human know of such things?
Wow, that’s talent. I even heard a pig squeal at the end 😭👏
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
She does a very good “Arooo!” with a little T rex thrown in at the end. I love it.
My old dog loves to “go to grandma’s” but there is always the chance that he’ll be left… When we have left him, he sits on the back of the couch so he can see out front and awooooooos every car that goes by…for the entire time we’re gone… Drives my mother crazy…
When she leaves her dogs with me, and comes back they’re like “already? I suppose ..” even tho they have to eat **dog food** in my house.
They’re all just so funny…
If you think that is bad you should get a husky. I have 2 and I’m not strong enough to walk them both at the same time so I walk one while the other stays home and then switch. They both hate when I leave with the other one but the younger one in particular will cry and cry and cry. Very loudly. I can hear him from down the block with all the doors and windows closed. One time we left a cell phone recording him while we walked the other he went on for 20 minutes before finally calming down.
Awww she just wants to be with her people! Sookie loves you two 🙂
Dogs and walks. My dog wouldn’t quit howling everytime anyone left the home without him. Even for 5 mins to do grab something from the kitchen garden. We tried ignoring him to train it out of him, but neither were we very strict about it, nor did he stop howling. And it was desperate and funny because we had a front door and a back door for him to constantly run between and worry over who left from where. Our neighbors always got baskets of produce from our garden every time all of us had to go out for something, and leave Casper behind. He’d howl intermittently till we got back every single time, no matter how old he got.
OMGosh. You should hear Wadly’s pug when he leaves her home!
Years ago, we tried dog-sitting for a friend. Unfortunately, the dog (Doberman) had been kept inside, and had never been left alone outside. She freaked and escaped. We reported the missing dog, but to no avail; she was gone.
But three days later, a police car pulled up in our driveway. What? We answered the door, and the police officer asked us, is this the dog you reported missing? He pointed at a three-month old German Shepard who had been kept at the police station for several days. We replied that no, that wasn’t the missing dog. So the officer asked us if we wanted to keep her anyway! So we did.
She’d been at the police station long enough that she considered them to be her “pack.” For the rest of her life, every time she heard a siren, she howled in response. She taught our other dog to howl back to sirens, so every time there was an emergency vehicle in hearing range, we were treated to a lovely serenade!
Note to self… don’t play this around my dog again. Whatever Sookie was saying, it certainly got my dog riled up.
Your home is so beautiful!
And my Ajax added his voice to Sooki’s song, with alot more adjectives and adverbs 😀
I currently have three dogs, who all suffer mightily from FOMO (fear of missing out). My first dog was a beagle mix, who taught my schnauzer a lovely hound dog singing-howl. I call it “the sad song of her adopted people,” and she sings it whenever I am playing with one of the others and leaving her behind.
My husband decided that our 4 hound mixes didn’t howl enough– so he decided to start howling and 3 (the boys) would join in. Now, when the basset mix barks (to demand something from us), the other 2 boys will begin howling… in harmony. The girl just rolls her eyes.
Ohhh, the poor, pitiful, put-upon puppy!
So cute 🤭😂
I have a 12ish year old basset/beagle mix who has had arthritis her entire life and I just found out is in stage 2 renal failure (not a good vet call). I also have a 7ish what turns out to be 3/4 pit/staffie mix 1/4 dachshund/min-pin mix. The younger dog and I want to walk farther and faster than the bagel who wants to ‘smell the roses’ (or eat them, actually it’s the other one who eats flowers). My solution was to buy a wagon (a collapsible one because I don’t have a garage for storage) to pull the bagel with us. This was then upgraded to a dog bike trailer that converts to a push stroller. She loves both, but we’ve reverted back to the wagon because getting the stroller out of the house lets the bugs in (I really wish I had a garage). Luckily my girls are in the 30 pound range so pulling her around isn’t a hardship…except the neighborhood children are FASCINATED by them both and come up to us whenever they see us. And that is why I wear a freaking mask when I walk my dogs. I also have to bring them both to every vet appointment because the ‘song of our people’ is just too much!
We had a female lab once, she is currently in dog heaven. We use to live in a neighborhood where the dogs would start barking around 11:30 at night. I would let Terra outside, she would walk around the fence a couple of times, then she would bark real loud. All of the neighborhood dogs would quit barking for the night. It was like she was saying “Mom said to cut it out. I’m trying to get some sleep!” It worked every time.
My Cane Corsos respond similarly to such “mistreatment”
Such anguish, Ilona, how could you? 🙂
Charli, 11 month old Whippet, was quite upset with Sookie’s tail of woe.
Awww poor baby 😂
Sounds like you have a hidden walrus somewhere 😁.
Love how expressive dogs can be! My pup (9 years old, but still a puppy) cries from “abandonment” too. He just had a surgery to remove a tumor from his spleen, they took the whole spleen as well, so he can’t go on long walks anymore and he misses them. Thankfully he’s recovering well so he can cry all he wants!!!
She is such a beautiful girl.
love your fur family members…
We now have a horse for my daughter who plays polo. Through the pandemic, barn time has been a true saving grace. My husband left a full bag of carrots on his tack box and walked away. Well…JR was mostly broken out of his stall and reaching for the bag when Joe came back through the barn. 🙂
Hang in there, Sookie. LOL.
When Sarge the black an tan coonhound arrived from rescue, Neighbors though an animal was dying. Our Sheltie only sang for trumpet excerpts. Our collie sang for fun.
Her s what their song sounds like. I think of Kate’ magical attack poodle grendel.

The second one was much more pathetic!!
That’s exactly how my Rhodie was! She was willing to go but her body couldn’t so her misery had to be shared! Very different from my cat who displays their aggression everywhere else
Um…. in Australia the term ‘Sookie la la’ or ‘sook’ means cry baby or whiner…… just saying.
Loving the animal tales ☺️
My daughters bulldog/pit mix is 13 or 14 and has to stay home a lot more. When she wants to go with us she starts with a low noise between a growl and a whine. It gets progressive louder until you take her somewhere. At first you think you have a broken appliance or something before you place the noise.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Many years ago, watching an Animal Planet show on wolves. There was a long sequence of wolf calls. My greyhound was watching the show with me and threw his head back and joined in. (He was not generally a howler, more of a “chatting” kind of vocalization.) He gave me a “I don’t know why I did that” look, and I said “must have been something important then, if you responded to it.”
He also always recognized other greyhounds on TV and would nose-kiss the screen when he saw them. Other dogs on TV got the tail wave, but no kisses.
You made a spelling mistake, Ilona. She is not a Sookie, she is a wookie.
My sister’s dog had knee surgery. Didn’t take or she was sure acting like the leg was not useable on Thanksgiving. 8 hours later my sister text that the patient had managed to catch a rabbit. Maybe the three legged thing was a begging strategy.
Btw my sister’s neighborhood produces the dumbest rabbits since they lose their lives because they get into the dog run. Friday was number 5 for 2020. You haven’t lived until you have to get the “toy” out of a shar pei’s mouth before coming into the house.
Awwww, poor baby! I also have a old lady drama queen, love them!! 😍
I love how Sookie is such a drama queen. My border collie was excited when I got up at 6:15 am. When I didn’t immediately let her out to pee, she gave me the sad, sad song of her bladder.
I heard “Get out! Get OUT! GET OUUUUUUU!!!!”
Dogs are so great! They tell you what’s on their mind without hesitation. Just like Gertrude Hunt.
I love how you see all the dog toys and comfy areas for a dog to recline and know she is a much loved and spoiled pet, while she wails as if you deserted her for ever. The contrast is hysterical
Awwwww, poor sweetie. Just wants to be with her pack! So misused lol. Friends have an old pup getting to that stage too. Used to run with us, now plods around the block. But still a love.
Of course you could do what my husband’s aunt did for her elderly dog, bring a little red wagon along. When the dog got tired, he went into the wagon for the rest of the walk. Eventually he could hardly walk at all but had his “walk” each day, was lifted out to pee, etc. and enjoyed getting pets from the neighbors, etc.
I told my husband that when I died, if I was especially good I’d get reincarnated as an old lady’s pampered dog.
That is just too funny!
Express yourself …for shame for shame
Funny, that’s the sound I make BEFORE the workout. 🤣
I often see people walking their dog with a stroller/cart/wagon into which the dog can be placed when it has had enough but the people have not. Perhaps a fat-tired garden cart if you’re walking over rough terrain?
As a way to sneak into the kitchen without the noise of those pretty slippers drawing all your dogs in your wake, try some beautifully beaded moccasins. If the are of moose hide, and fur lined, you can sometimes fool the canine patrol.
ok….I know I have read that phrase in one of your books…which was it?
I don’t have it in me to look up the specific phrase (the sad song of his/her people) in each book on my Kindle. Of which I own ALL of them…
It’s going to bug me for the exact length of time it will take me to open up my Kindle, and download every Kate Daniels, Inkeeper, and Iron & Magic (although I don’t think it’s that one). I know it’s one of those….
I am feeling like it’s somehting Grendel did.
When are you coming out with your next innkeeper book? I have struggled this year with breast cancer and surgeries and infections and blood clots and I have made my husband reread them but they are the only books that make me happy during this difficult time. 2020 sucks!
All Hail Her Diva-ness!!!! Hear her sorrow and woe….Her Pain and suffering of being D-E-N-I-E-D ! How Dare you Humans! LOL Love It! I especially love how she knows the position where acoustics for the perfect echo is and keeps picking her place to ensure all evil doers can hear her complaints!
Thank you for the post, Ilona Andrews. Titan was highly sympathetic to the comments.
Interestingly he does not howl. I thought was instinctive but he goes “Ar Woof roooo!” then I get the looks of death when I ROFLOL . Sigh. I speculate that it has to do with his mixture of breeds.
Anyway, I loved your girls comments about being “”Abandoned! Woe is Me!” by you and Gordon. Thank you.
Our Champion show poodle would howl brokenly to Sandord and Son theme growing up setting all the dogs in the house going. She was so bad, I could sing the theme for her and she would sing with me.
